Shakespeare's clown, Morris dancing, the Mechanicals, The Lord Chamberlain, Elizabeth I and 16th Century country life will be the background to our 2008 Christmas Revels. We begin just outside Norwich as Will Kempe, a member of Shakepeare's 'Chamberlain's Men' and known for his roles as the fool or clown, arrives, having completed a wager to dance a Morris dance from London. Elizabeth I is also on a tour of the provinces and intends to make Norwich one of her stopping points where she hopes to enjoy a local celebration of the winter solstice. The refined Will Kempe plans a courtly production which his meager cast of mechanicals brings to a hilarious conclusion interpreting it in their country ways. Will trembles at the thought of how the Queen will react. These events are set against a background of courtly dances, madrigals, renaissance music and song that celebrate life in Elizabethan England.
