THE CHRISTMAS REVELS: AN APPALACHIAN CELEBRATION OF THE WINTER SOLSTICE

PERFORMANCE DETAILS

It’s the season of the The Christmas Revels: An Appalachian Celebration of the Winter Solstice sometime in the late 1930s, and Cecil Johnson, a government-funded folklore researcher is traveling through Appalachia, collecting traditional songs, dance tunes, legends and stories that are shared with him by the people he encounters along the way.

Join the fun as Cecil meets Jack, Aunt Ollie, Miss Conner and other colorful characters who sing, dance, tell stories and put on an authentically American version of the traditional Winter Solstice Mummers’ Play in celebration of the Yuletide season, New Year’s and Old Christmas (January Sixth), but beware! There are folks in the holler who are suspicious of Cecil and his motives (especially his government affiliation!), and they are determined to shut down his project.

Want to test your singing chops in the Pub Sing first ever Fun Singing Contest?

• $5 entry online or at the event.     

• 3 minute maximum length of song.

• First, second or third place prizes.

• Individual, duet, trio, groups welcome.  

• Judging by audience.

• Microphone and speakers provided

•  Laptop will be available for USB devices. Acoustic guitar back up also available.

Wylde Accord is a collaboration between Wylde Meade and In Accord, two groups known for acoustic music, tight harmonies and a wide variety of music, old and new.

THE VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS CAROLING PARTY // december 2021

Revelers gathered family and friends and joined Revels Houston for an old-fashioned Christmas caroling sing-along! Featuring the Revels Houston Solstice Singers and The Merrie Bande of Players on video. We were led in time-honored traditional carols and Revels favorites, and shared the spoken word through poetry and storytelling.

As COVID closed normal venues, Revels Houston and many of our sister Revels companies across the nation created virtual Christmas Revels.

Our Christmas Revels in 2020 celebrated our 30th year serving our community. We selected memories from our English, Appalachian, Nordic, Russian, Hispanic, Romany, and Scottish Revels to create two videos. Each video runs approximately one hour. The links to the videos are below, free of charge.
